The Council for Building Culture in the Federal Chancellery

In 2008 the Austrian Federal Government established a Council for Building Culture in the Federal Chancellery. The Council advises all federal services and institutions to ensure and promote high quality of its built facilities. It aims to increase awareness for the applied principles of high quality for buildings and the built environment (Baukultur) on all political levels and acts as a forum of dialogue between architecture, politics and administration. The Council focuses on awareness raising of a broader public and aims at establishing Baukultur as a wider concept of several cross-cutting sectors, such as energy efficiency, construction economy, architecture, spatial planning, social development or education, just to name a few.

The Council and its chair are supported by a coordination office in the Federal Chancellery.

The Council currently consists of 28 Members, comprising representatives of all Federal Ministries, the Federal Real Estate Agency, the Federal Office for Preservation of Monuments, the Associations of Municipalities, Cities and Towns as well as ten experts from NGOs and the social partners. The members and the chair are appointed for a period of five years and can be reappointed once. The Council meets at least twice a year and issues – whenever appropriate – recommendations, statements and publications.

Representatives of the nine Federal States (Länder) can attend the Council meetings as observers.
